No matter where you live if you’ve owned a car that isn’t equipped for winter driving, chances are you’ve been stuck in the snow at least once. That can be highly inconvenient and even dangerous, especially for people who are on the go and don’t like being late.
If you have ever had to drive in the snow, you know how challenging it can be. The right tires and a good emergency packing kit make all of the difference when it comes to driving in winter conditions. But which vehicle is best for snow driving? Is there a vehicle that stands out above the rest?
Whether equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD) and better tires, cars that do well in the snow and winter can be an excellent investment. Having the safety of AWD for those snowy days will give you great peace of mind. And, knowing which cars are best for winter driving can also save you money (or make you money if you choose to invest in some stocks of these companies).
The Mazda CX-9 is a winner in the midsize crossover category. It has everything you need in a winter car―all-wheel drive, active driver assists, and a robust engine―but its handling sets it apart. The CX-9 is nimble around corners, even with studded snow tires installed. This makes it an excellent vehicle for navigating city streets with cars parked on either side. If you have an SUV budget but don’t want to compromise performance for safety features, this is the one for you. The base model starts at just over $32,000.
The Subaru Forester has been a favorite of skiers and mountain people since it was introduced to the U.S. market in 1998. It can be challenging not hard to see why: The Forester comes standard with all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, enough to tackle most snowy roads without incident or the need for snow chains. The Forester also boasts up to 74 cubic feet of cargo space (with the rear seats folded down), making it ideal for hauling gear for those winter outings requiring more equipment than usual.
The Ford F-150 is an obvious choice for the best truck in winter weather thanks to its range of impressive powertrains, including one of our favorite turbodiesel engines on the market. The Ford F-150 comes standard with rear-wheel drive but can be equipped with four-wheel drive. A 10.8-inch ground clearance helps this truck navigate snowdrifts, while optional special tires help grip roads covered in ice or slush. With a bed that can carry more than 1100 pounds of payload and a max tow rating of up to 13,200 pounds when properly equipped, this truck is ready to haul you and your family—plus gear—through any weather.
The Honda Accord is an excellent all-around sedan with a comfortable cabin that feels like a luxury car. This midsize sedan also has a spacious trunk and plenty of room for passengers in the back seat. A turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine comes standard with front-wheel drive and continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Incase you stay in an area where wintertime brings snow, ice, or rain, you can add optional all-wheel drive to this sedan at any trim level.
If you want to get a little more power out of your Accord, opt for the available turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which produces 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Cars that offer traction, stability, and safety features are best engineered for harsh weather conditions. Many do not know that AWD (All Wheel Drive) vehicles are some of the best performing winter vehicles you can purchase. Their design includes a set of drive wheels for each axle (front and back).

A lease transfer works by allowing one driver to transfer their lease to another, who must qualify for credit approval with the finance company. A lease transfer is a simple process in which the name on a lease account is changed for the duration of the term. Other than the registered driver and the name on the lease, the remainder of the lease contract is unchanged. This includes mileage restrictions, wear-and-tear restrictions and the total length of the lease in months.
